A message from Jenny Heskett, Countryside Officer Sites and Trails

Kit Hill

We now have ponies and cattle in all the grazed compartments on the Hill.

On the north side just ponies (arrived very skinny from there winter grounds)

On the south and east the regular ponies with the coloured stallion plus a few
cows.

On the west site cattle only.

Duchy Woodland

A few years ago, SCADRA negotiated with the Duchy of Cornwall to obtain access to Deer Park and Sheba Woods for horse riders, in exchange for an annual permit fee.

Management at Duchy Woodland have expressed their disappointment at the way the access has been abused by some who have left gates unlocked, leaving the woodland open to those who have not paid for permits.

The Duchy of Cornwall gets no benefit from allowing rider access other than the permit fee.  There is a real risk that horse rider access may be withdrawn altogether if the situation does not improve.

There is no reason to believe that any SCADRA members are responsible for the current situation, but we could all help by taking responsibility ourselves.  The SCADRA committee asks members to ensure that the access gates to Deer Park and Sheba Woods are locked, and if you find them open, please take the initiative to lock them.  We appreciate that the padlocks are not very horse friendly, but they are better than not having any access at all.

Your help is very much appreciated.

Thank you
